In the end, it’s usually both more comfortable and more energy efficient than just wearing a single thick garment.

In extreme cold, a quilted thermal pants and thermal jacket can be advantageously used as an insulating intermediate layer on top of a wool or micro fleece undershirt, for example under a work overall or other shell garments. But to be able to work in a comfortable way, you must not get too hot either, so make sure to adapt the thickness of your base layer and the remaining layers according to the conditions you will be in, as well as how active you will be.
